Frequently asked
The questions before
the questions.
How do I know if I need therapy?
Most people don't arrive certain. They arrive with a feeling that something isn't working, or with a specific concern they want to address. Therapy can help with diagnosable conditions like anxiety and depression, but it can equally support people who simply want to understand themselves better, navigate a difficult time, or change a pattern they're tired of. If you're uncertain, the introductory call is a good place to think it through together.
How long does therapy take?
There's no single answer. Some people come for a focused piece of work over 8–12 sessions. Others work weekly for a year or more, particularly when the issues are longstanding or involve early-life patterns. We'll talk openly about pace and direction as we go, and review the work together periodically. You're free to end at any time.
Is everything I say confidential?
Yes, with a small number of standard exceptions that all therapists are bound by. I keep everything we discuss private. The exceptions are: a serious risk of harm to yourself or another person, a disclosure of a child or vulnerable adult at risk, or certain legal obligations (such as terrorism-related information). I also discuss my work in regular clinical supervision, but anonymously, and your identity is never shared.
What happens in a first session?
The first session is mostly a chance for you to start talking and for both of us to get a feel for working together. I'll ask a little about what's brought you, what you're hoping for, and a small amount of background. There's no formula or homework. You don't have to have it all figured out. That's often what therapy is for.
Do you offer evening or weekend sessions?
I have a small number of early-evening slots available; weekend sessions aren't part of my current practice. Daytime hours offer the best availability. We can talk about what might fit on the introductory call.
What's your cancellation policy?
Sessions cancelled with more than 48 hours' notice can usually be rescheduled within the same week, where I have space. Sessions cancelled with less notice are charged in full, as the time is held for you. This is standard practice in private therapy and helps maintain the continuity that's essential to the work.
Do you work with health insurance providers?
I'm not currently registered with insurance providers. Clients using employee assistance programmes or insurance schemes typically pay me directly and then claim back, depending on their policy. I'm happy to provide receipts for this.
I'm in crisis right now. Can you help?
This site isn't a crisis service and I'm not able to offer urgent support outside scheduled sessions. If you're in crisis right now, please contact Samaritans on 116 123 (free, 24 hours), your GP, or NHS 111. If life is in danger, please call 999 or go to A&E. Once you have immediate support in place, please do still get in touch about longer-term therapy.
A question I haven't answered?
Send a message. I usually reply within two working days, and there's no pressure to book anything.
